⃰ Pursuant to Directive (EU) 2023/959, maritime transport has been included in the European Union’s greenhouse gas emission allowance trading scheme (“EU ETS”). The obligations imposed on shipping companies, particularly the obligation to purchase allowances, result in increased maritime transport costs. Therefore, starting January 1, 2024, a charge called “EU ETS costs” has been incorporated into the ticket price for each passenger and each vehicle. The amount varies depending on the route and is non-discountable and non-refundable. Currently, public service lines (from Naples and Palermo to Cagliari and vice versa; from Civitavecchia to Arbatax and Cagliari and vice versa) are excluded from the application of the EU ETS system.
