Training courses on Maritime Intermodality

Grimaldi Lines is one of the founders and partners of the Escola Europea – Intermodal Transport, the European reference centre for training in sustainable logistics and intermodal transport. The objective of the Escola is to promote intermodal transport as the basis for the development of sustainable logistics and more efficient supply chains in Europe.

The Escola offers specialised training on maritime intermodality. The courses began in 2004 as an initiative promoted by the Customer Service Department of the Port of Barcelona, with the collaboration of Grimaldi Lines and the Ports of Rome and Lazio. In 2006 the Escola was formally established in its current form by the Ports of Barcelona, Rome and Genoa together with the shipping companies Grimaldi Lines and GNV.

The maritime intermodality and Motorways of the Sea courses are aimed at professionals from the sector and at students of logistics, transport and international trade. They take place on board the vessels operating short sea shipping services and typically last between three and four days. During the voyage participants experience a real short sea shipping route while attending lectures and workshops, gaining a first-hand understanding of port operations, logistics chains and intermodal transport systems.

Alongside these signature courses, the Escola has expanded its training portfolio with technical programmes covering topics such as temperature-controlled logistics, groupage and consolidation centres, port operations, and maritime–rail intermodality through the SURCO courses.

In addition, the Escola has developed Port Virtual Lab (PVL), an innovative digital simulation platform that recreates the operations of a port community. Through PVL, students and professionals can simulate logistics chains, analyse transport routes and understand decision-making processes within intermodal transport systems.

The Escola adapts its programmes to the specific needs of each group and can include visits to logistics facilities and port terminals, as well as technical visits in cities such as Rome or Barcelona.

The Escola also organises courses aimed exclusively at professionals, where in addition to classes and workshops, networking activities are encouraged among participants to foster future professional collaboration.
